===== Description =====
"SoCal Helmut" is a clone classified as *Trichocereus pachanoi*. While a detailed botanical description outlining specific rib counts, spine lengths, and precise epidermal coloration is not fully documented, it is recognized by growers as a visually distinct phenotype. It exhibits noticeable morphological differences when compared to other common Southern California *T. pachanoi* cultivars. The clone's growth habit and appearance may vary depending on environmental factors, particularly UV exposure, which has been noted to alter its growth characteristics.

===== History & Origin =====
The clone originated from a seller located in San Diego County, California, with Escondido being the suspected point of origin. The name "SoCal Helmut" was proposed as a provisional identifier by the community member Trich Ocereus in approximately 2023 to distinguish this unique specimen until further historical provenance could be established.

===== Cultivation Notes =====
This clone thrives in the ground in the inland valleys of San Diego County (including Escondido, Vista, and Valley Center), which provide an ideal microclimate for *Trichocereus* cultivation. In areas with lower UV levels, the plant may exhibit altered growth habits. Like most *Trichocereus pachanoi*, it prefers a highly gritty, well-draining soil mix, deep but infrequent watering during the active growing season, and acclimation to bright sunlight to maintain its natural morphology.

===== Community Discussion & Citations =====
//The clone's identity and naming arose from a community discussion regarding its distinctiveness and geographic origin in Southern California. Growers noted that the specimen does not closely resemble other established SoCal pachanoi clones when grown under identical conditions.//

^ Date ^ Speaker ^ Key Insight/Quote ^
| 2023 (approx) | Trich Ocereus | "Maybe until we find further info we should call it “SoCal Helmut” or something?" |
| 2023 (approx) | Kohl Iverson | "tbh it seems pretty distinct when I compare it to other socal pach. In this in-ground area, I have most of the other socal pach near and it doesn’t resemble any of them" |

===== Credibility Notes =====
Kohl Iverson was assigned a confidence score of 8 due to providing specific geographic context regarding the seller's location and offering a direct comparative analysis based on side-by-side cultivation with other Southern California *T. pachanoi* clones. Trich Ocereus (Tanner Shackleford) was assigned a score of 7 for proposing the community name and noting the clone's phenotypic sensitivity to varying UV levels.
