===== Description =====
"Aerial roots" refers to a physiological condition in Trichocereus species where adventitious roots emerge directly from the aerial sections of the cactus stem above the soil level. The epidermis around the emerging roots remains typical of the species, though the root tips themselves appear as small, brownish-white, cylindrical protrusions pushing through the skin, typically near areoles or along the ribs.

===== Origin =====
This is a physiological response observed across various cacti due to rootbound conditions and/or chronic underwatering with moderate to high air humidity.

===== Cultivation Notes =====
When a Trichocereus begins producing aerial roots, it serves as a physical indicator that the plant is searching out more moisture and nutrients, and subterranean root system may be restricted, compacted, or struggling within its current container. The recommended cultivation response is to make sure the plant is receiving water as soon as the substrate is dry beneath the surface, and consider repotting the cactus into a larger container. Growers should use a highly aerated, well-draining soil medium with a reduced organic component (such as increased pumice, perlite, or gravel) to encourage healthy subterranean root expansion and improve airflow.
