===== Description =====
Ptiliidae (commonly known as featherwing beetles) are the smallest known beetles. They are characterized by their extremely minute size, making them difficult to identify without magnification. They typically inhabit soil, leaf litter, and fungi. These beetles are commonly confused with springtails, which are also small, soil-dwelling organisms.

===== History & Origin =====
The presence of these beetles in cactus cultivation substrates was documented in a community discussion around March 2026, initiated by media shared by Job de Jong. Expert Gee Bee identified the specimens as members of the Ptiliidae family.

===== Cultivation Notes =====
Ptiliidae beetles are harmless decomposers that feed on decaying organic matter and fungi rather than living plant tissue. Their presence does not harm cacti, and no chemical treatment or eradication is necessary. If growers wish to manage their populations, they can do so by reducing excess organic debris and maintaining proper soil moisture.

===== Community Discussion & Citations =====
The community discussion focused on identifying tiny insects found in cactus soil. Gee Bee identified them as Ptiliidae, explaining their ecological role as decomposers. Charles DesertSparrow Love suggested they could alternatively be springtails, which are also harmless soil-dwellers.
