===== Overview =====
Calcium deficiency in cacti is an abiotic physiological disorder rather than an infectious disease. It primarily impacts the rapidly developing tissues of the plant, making it a significant concern for growers seeking healthy, blemish-free specimens. Because calcium is an immobile nutrient, a lack of availability quickly halts or disfigures new growth.

===== Symptoms & Identification =====
The disorder is characterized by damage localized entirely on the new growth and tips of the cactus. Unlike fungal infections, there are no visible fungal hyphae present on the affected tips. It is commonly confused with biotic pathogens such as //Bipolaris//. Peruvian torch cacti (//Trichocereus peruvianus//) appear to be particularly susceptible to exhibiting these symptoms temporarily after being cut.

===== Cause & Spread =====
As an abiotic disorder, calcium deficiency does not spread between plants. The primary cause is nutrient lockout: if the soil pH runs too low, the cactus is unable to absorb calcium even if it is being fed properly. Because calcium is immobile within the plant, it cannot be relocated from older tissues to meet the high demand of new growth, resulting in localized deficiency at the tips.

===== Treatment & Management =====
To treat and prevent calcium deficiency, growers should:
  * **Check and Adjust Soil pH**: Ensure the pH is not running too low, as acidic soil locks out calcium absorption (Gee Bee).
  * **Supplement Nutrients**: Boost both calcium and potassium levels (Chris Cosby).
  * **Environmental Care**: Keep the growing tips dry and ensure the plant receives adequate sunlight to allow the cactus to successfully grow out of the damaged phase (Chris Cosby).

| 2026-06-22 | Zac John | Gee Bee | "If the ph is running low, calcium is locked out. Since it's all new growth affected and we don't see hyphae on the tips, suspect abiotic." |

===== Notes & Contradictions =====
While Chris Cosby suggested the symptoms could potentially be a mix of temporary calcium deficiency and the fungal pathogen //Bipolaris//, community authority Gee Bee clarified that the absence of hyphae on the affected tips points to a purely abiotic cause. When diagnosing tip damage, the lack of fungal structures combined with low soil pH confirms a calcium lockout rather than a biotic infection.
