===== Description =====
Chemical burn is a non-pathogenic physiological disorder affecting Trichocereus cacti, characterized by epidermal blistering, localized burning, and necrotic scarring. The damage typically manifests as dark or black pustules, bumps, or patches on the ribs and epidermis where phytotoxic substances make contact. The waxy, glaucous cuticle of the cactus is stripped by these chemical agents, exposing the underlying cells. While the spines and areoles generally remain intact, the surrounding epidermal tissue suffers cell necrosis. This damage is frequently confused with fungal infections, but it is entirely abiotic. The lesions eventually scar over, and while the aesthetic damage is permanent, the apical meristem and overall structural integrity of the cactus are usually preserved, allowing the plant to recover and produce healthy new growth.

As a physiological disorder rather than a specific genetic clone, the physical characteristics of affected specimens vary depending on the underlying cultivar. However, typical affected specimens (such as those of Trichocereus pachanoi) exhibit a light to dark green epidermis, often with a glaucous waxy coating when healthy. The ribs typically range from 5 to 8 in count, with short, inconspicuous yellow to brown spines arising from small, rounded areoles. When afflicted with chemical burn, the epidermis loses its glaucous sheen, showing localized black or dark brown blistering and necrotic scarring along the rib flanks, while the spines and areoles themselves remain largely unaffected.

===== History & Origin =====
Chemical burn is an acquired physiological condition rather than a cultivar or clone bred by a specific hybridizer. The history of this condition in the community is documented through various cases of cultivation mishaps where growers applied phytotoxic substances. The specific cases documented here occurred in early 2026, with notable reports from growers Julian Kewe and Carlos Dumas. The primary source of the disorder is the topical application of household or agricultural chemicals, and there is no single breeder or geographic origin.

===== Cultivation Notes =====
Cultivation of Trichocereus cacti requires careful management of pests and pathogens without causing chemical trauma. To avoid chemical burns:
* **Avoid Soaps and Oils:** Do not apply insecticidal soaps, horticultural soaps, neem oil, or fertilizers containing fish oil. These substances strip the protective waxy cuticle of the epidermis.
* **Avoid Harsh Solvents and Acids:** Do not use undiluted isopropyl alcohol or vinegar-based solutions (such as apple cider vinegar).
* **Pest Control:** Spinosad is recommended as a safe alternative for pest control, but it must never be mixed with horticultural soaps.
* **Sun and Heat Management:** If a cactus has been treated with any topical agent or has suffered cuticle damage, it must be kept out of direct sunlight and intense heat. The loss of the waxy cuticle deprives the plant of UV protection, leading to severe sunburn ("frying") and compounding necrosis.
* **General Trichocereus Care:** Healthy Trichocereus cacti thrive in a highly porous, well-draining soil mix. They require regular watering during the active growing season and complete dryness during winter dormancy. They prefer bright, filtered light or full sun once fully acclimated and undamaged.

===== Community Discussion & Citations =====
The community discussion surrounding these cases highlights a strong consensus that Trichocereus species are highly sensitive to topical chemical applications. Multiple growers noted that remedies commonly used for other plants—such as soaps, oils, and vinegar—frequently cause severe epidermal blistering and scarring on cacti. The discussion emphasizes that the damage is abiotic and physiological rather than fungal, though it is often misdiagnosed as a pathogen. A key insight from the discussion is that non-polar substances (like soaps and oils) strip the waxy cuticle, which provides critical UV protection, thereby exposing the cactus to severe sunburn and heat damage.

| 2026-02-09 (approx) | Peter Nehen | "Looks like chemical burn" |
| 2026-02-09 (approx) | Paul Smyle | "Did you treat it with undiluted isopropyl ? I've already seen some do this but I don't remember what caused it ... I don't think its fungal, I think it's blistering from a chemical, sun or something else. The black bumps will scar but it should be ok in the long run 🙂" |
| 2026-02-09 (approx) | Dusty McAdon | "My guess is something with soap or oil. (Insecticidal soap, neem oil or fertilizer with fish oil)." |
| 2026-02-16 (approx) | Jamie Bolting | "one time I sprayed mine with spinosad + hort soap. It absolutely burnt the shit out of everything haha. I suspect that the soap, or I suppose anything non polar like that, strips the waxy coating off the cacti, which exists for UV protection among a ton of other stuff, ultimately leading to cell necrosis" |
| 2026-02-16 (approx) | Eduardo Colon | "mine just did this last week because I sprayed it with a mixture of a little bit of apple cider vinegar and Dr bronner's. Then I hit it with some neem oil. It made it a bit worse. I had to fight the fungus though. Killed the fungus, but caused this same reaction." |
| 2026-02-16 (approx) | Michael Kießling | "Looks like typocal demages caused by spraying agents" |
| 2026-06-23 | Maro Lopez | "All soaps burn cacti you should use spinosad" |
| 2026-06-24 | Chris Cosby | "Yep soaps are not kind to cacti" |

===== Credibility Notes =====
Jamie Bolting is rated highly for providing a detailed, scientifically accurate explanation of the physiological mechanism of chemical burns (the stripping of the waxy cuticle by non-polar substances) alongside consistent personal observations. Paul Smyle, Eduardo Colon, and Dusty McAdon are ratedfor providing specific, detailed examples of chemical agents (isopropyl alcohol, apple cider vinegar, Dr. Bronner's, neem oil, fish oil) and their direct effects. Maro Lopez and Chris Cosby are rateddue to strong community consensus regarding the phytotoxicity of soaps on cacti. Peter Nehen and Michael Kießling provided accurate, immediate identifications of the damage as typical of spraying agents. Gee Bee did not participate in this discussion.
