===== Overview =====
Fungal infections on cacti, specifically stem cankers, are common diseases that present significant challenges to growers in warm, humid regions. Often triggered by a combination of high temperatures and elevated humidity, these infections cause raised lesions and can compromise plant health if left unmanaged. Community authority Gee Bee identifies these issues as stem cankers characterized by microscopic structures that penetrate the plant's outer layers.

===== Symptoms & Identification =====
Fungal infections typically manifest as surface blemishes, spots, or lesions on the epidermis of the cactus.
* **Raised Bumps:** A raised bump on the skin indicates the initial point of infection.
* **Internal Structure:** Beneath the outer structure of the bump lies a point of penetration. A penetration peg extends from this point into the chlorenchyma, with a feeding structure called the huastaria lying underneath. To confirm if a peg is protruding into the chlorenchyma, the outer structure would need to be removed.
* **Progression:** These peg infections can sometimes travel vertically within the plant tissue for a significant distance.
* **Physical Triggers:** The initial entry point for pathogens may sometimes be physical damage, such as punctures caused by the spines of neighboring cacti when plants are placed too close together.
* **Environmental Context:** Symptoms frequently flare up during periods of sustained high heat (low 90s°F) and high humidity (fluctuating between 50% and 80%).

===== Cause & Spread =====
The primary drivers of this condition are environmental, allowing specific fungal pathogens to colonize the host:
* **Pathogen Mechanism:** The infection is a stem canker. The fungus spreads internally via a penetration peg that extends from the surface bump into the chlorenchyma.
* **Climate:** The combination of high heat and high humidity creates an ideal breeding ground for fungal spores. Growers in wet, humid regions like Florida and South Texas report that these conditions make the disease difficult to avoid entirely.
* **Moisture Accumulation:** Excess moisture from rainfall or improper watering schedules allows the fungus to establish and spread across the plant's skin.

===== Treatment & Management =====
Management focuses on targeted chemical applications and strict moisture control:
* **Chemical Treatments:** Gee Bee recommends using **thiophanate methyl** or **propiconozole** to treat stem cankers.
* **Watering Discipline:** Leviticus St Orms advises growers to "Be careful when you water. M a ke sure it wo t rain just after and will dry out rapidly. They like flashes of water." Watering directly before nightfall or right before rain should be avoided to prevent prolonged moisture exposure.
* **Shelter:** Utilizing an overhang or shelter is highly recommended in rainy climates to prevent cacti from receiving unwanted water, while still ensuring they receive adequate airflow.

===== Notes & Contradictions =====
There is a notable contradiction regarding chemical treatments. While general community members like Robby Lapp note that growers often suggest spraying with a copper solution or using phosphoric acid, topic authority Gee Bee explicitly corrected this on 2026-07-11. Gee Bee stated that phosphoric acid is a poor performer when confronting stem cankers, as it is instead suited for zoospores such as *Phytophthora* and *Pythium*. Gee Bee's recommendation to use thiophanate methyl or propiconozole supersedes the general community advice.

Additionally, David Hajdu raised a question regarding whether digging out the penetration peg might encourage further spreading or if the infection remains localized, which remains unconfirmed by the community.
