===== Description =====
Fusarium oxysporum is a ubiquitous, soil-borne fungal pathogen that affects Trichocereus species, causing vascular wilt and blight. Rather than a cactus clone, it is a systemic disease that integrates into the plant's vascular system. Visually, it manifests as yellowing of the epidermis, wilting, and characteristic brown discoloration of the internal vascular tissue. It can present either as an aerial blight on the upper sections of the plant or as a root-involved infection.

===== History & Origin =====
As a widely distributed environmental fungus, Fusarium oxysporum is not a cultivated clone but a pathogen. Its occurrence and management within the Trichocereus community were highlighted in discussions in early 2026, primarily documented through cases observed by growers like Ben Hinrichsen and diagnosed by community experts.

===== Cultivation Notes =====
Because the fungus is systemic, it cannot be fully cured once established, only managed. The following protocols help control and prevent its expression:
  * **Fungicidal Treatment:** Propiconazole is recommended. For aerial blight presentations, it should be applied as a foliar spray. A soil drench can be used in tandem for systemic protection.
  * **Fertilization:** Avoid ammonia-based nitrogen fertilizers, which promote fungal growth. Use nitrate-based fertilizers instead.
  * **Environmental Parameters:** Keep soil pH above the highly acidic 5.0–5.5 range, as acidic and wet soils favor the pathogen. Avoid excess moisture and temperatures in the 80°F–90°F range if the pathogen is active.
  * **Stress Reduction:** Prevent root damage, nutrient lockout, and low-light conditions, as plant stress triggers the expression of the disease.

It spreads via contaminated water, soil, and tools, infecting roots—especially when wounded—and causes yellowing, wilting, and brown vascular discoloration. It persists for years via chlamydospores." |
