===== Description =====
"Humidity issues" refer to a physiological disorder in //Trichocereus// and other cacti caused by excess atmospheric moisture and environmental dampness. This condition is non-infectious but can compromise the plant's cuticle and overall health, making it a common concern for growers cultivating cacti in temperate, coastal, or highly humid regions. It's also common for plants grown indoors without proper ventilation or humidity control.

Issues manifest as raised black blisters on the skin, sometimes weeping or oozing black. The blisters scar and scab over in time, leaving tan scars. These blisters are often called "humidity spots" by growers, though a more scientifically accurate term would be oedema.

===== Origin =====
Cacti drink in water through their roots, store it in their column where it is used for various metobolic processes, then transpire it out through their pores. This occours at night when air humidity and temperature change, triggering cactis CAM process to open its pores. If the roots take up more moisture than the pores can transpire out, internal fluid pressure can spike high enough that the plant's cells literally stretch past their limit and rupture. Once those cells burst, the fluids leak into the surrounding tissue, forming black raised blister-like bumps.

===== Cultivation Notes =====
To manage and prevent humidity-related physiological issues in *Trichocereus*, growers should focus on cultural and environmental modifications:
  * **Airflow:** Maximize ventilation and air movement around the plants using fans or open-sided greenhouse structures to prevent stagnant, humid microclimates.
  * **Substrate:** Utilize a highly porous, gritty soil mix with a high percentage of inorganic materials (such as pumice, perlite, or scoria) to ensure rapid drainage and root-zone aeration, also known as air filled porosity. Roots need to breathe, too.
  * **Watering:** Make sure substrate goes dry beneath the surface before watering again. Significantly reduce watering during periods of high ambient humidity, heavy fog, or cool, damp weather.
  * **Shelter:** Protect sensitive specimens from prolonged overhead rainfall or heavy morning dew to keep the epidermis dry.
  * **Nutrition:** Feeding a well balanced nutrient fertilizer containing proper ratios of all required nutrients can increase cactis resistance to these issues. Calcium strengthens cell walls, potassium helps the plant regulate moisture, magnesium aids the metobolic process which includes the use of water, and silicon strengthens the outer skin.
  * **Clogged pores:** Anything physically blocking the transpiration of moisture out of the pores can also cause a moisture blister. A common culprit is foliar applied oil or soap products.

===== Community Discussion & Citations =====
The discussion arose when John Davutovic shared images of a cactus exhibiting epidermal stress. Umberto Stocchi diagnosed the condition as being caused by humidity. Davutovic expressed surprise at this diagnosis, noting his location in Melbourne, Australia, which is known for its variable but occasionally damp and temperate climate.

===== Credibility Notes =====
* **Umberto Stocchi:** Rated moderately for providing the initial diagnosis, which aligns with common physiological responses in *Trichocereus* exposed to damp climates, though the explanation lacked detailed botanical elaboration.
* **John Davutovic:** Rated moderately as the primary source of the specimen photos and local environmental context (Melbourne, Australia), which helps correlate the physical symptoms with regional climate patterns.
* **Gee Bee:** Did not participate in this discussion.
