===== Overview =====
Humidity spots are a common, benign physiological disorder or localized reaction in cacti, typically triggered by high environmental moisture, overwatering, or high humidity. While they cause aesthetic blemishes, they are generally non-lethal and tend to resolve into dry scars over time. This condition is particularly prevalent in humid climates (such as Florida) or following sudden environmental transitions.

===== Symptoms & Identification =====
The condition presents as localized spots or lesions on the epidermis of the cactus. It is commonly observed on columnar cacti (such as OTB). Over time, these spots dry out and heal, leaving behind permanent, corky, light-colored scars on the skin of the plant.

===== Cause & Spread =====
The exact pathogen or biological cause remains unconfirmed in the community discussion, and it is widely suspected to be an environmental disorder rather than an infectious disease. The primary triggers are excess water, high humidity, and moisture. The spots often appear after environmental changes, such as transitioning plants from pots into the ground during damp seasons (e.g., late autumn). There is no indication that the spots spread from plant to plant, but multiple plants exposed to the same wet conditions may develop them simultaneously.

===== Treatment & Management =====

Growers report two successful approaches to managing humidity spots:
* **Passive Management (Neglect):** If left alone, the spots typically resolve on their own. Ryan Pierson noted that after leaving the affected plants untreated, "They healed and now my cactus have cool little scars."
* **Surgical Intervention:** For localized, severe, or aesthetically undesirable spots, the affected tissue can be excised. Justin Bryant reported success by cutting the spot off and treating the fresh wound with sulfur: "I ended up cutting it off and putting sulfur on the wound. It healed very well and now started pushing 3 more pups."

===== Notes & Contradictions =====
Gee Bee did not participate in this discussion thread.

There is a minor divergence in management strategies among growers. While some prefer to cut away the spots and apply sulfur to prevent rot and encourage pupping, others advocate for leaving the spots to heal naturally, which results in cosmetic scarring but avoids surgical wounding of the plant. Both methods have been reported as successful.
