===== Description =====
Mealybugs are a common sap-sucking pest. Also known as //Hypogeococcus//. Affected cacti display characteristic white, cotton-like fuzzy patches (resembling small cotton balls) concentrated around the areoles, growth tips, or within the root system. The epidermis of infested plants often appears dull or discolored due to nutrient depletion. Prolonged infestations can severely stunt spine development, distort rib structures, and induce abnormal growth deformities. Subterranean root mealybugs leave white powdery deposits throughout the root zone, leading to a slow decline in plant vigor.

===== Cultivation Notes =====
Preventative and curative measures are critical to maintaining //Trichocereus// health and preventing the spread of infestations:
  * **Substrate & Repotting:** Unpot and examine roots and soil for signs of the pests. Treat roots if needed. Never reuse contaminated soil.
  * **Treatments:** Inspect plants with a magnifying glass or jeweler's loupe. Mist the pests and crevices of the plant with a weak concentration of isopropyl alcohol and quickly brush off the bugs with a toothbrush. Immediately follow with a thorough water rinse. For root infestations, wash all soil off the roots, spray with isopropyl alcohol, and submerge the bare-root plant in water for 24 hours.
  * **Chemical & Systemic Control:**
    * **Imidacloprid:** Highly effective as a systemic root drench to eradicate persistent infestations. However, it is a broad-spectrum insecticide that persists in soil and plant tissue for a year or more; growers recommend selective application, particularly for indoor plants, to avoid harming outdoor pollinators like bees and butterflies. Not available in some areas, such as CA.
    * **Dinotefuran:** as found in Venom by Valent, is an effective treatment for Thrips and mealybugs.
    * **Pyrethrin:** Apply pyrethrin concentrate or premixed sprays directly to the pests.
    * **Nicotine:** Ground organic tobacco powder can be sprinkled onto the substrate, or extracted with alcohol to create a spray.

===== Community Discussion & Citations =====
The community discussion focused on diagnosing and treating severe pest infestations on *Trichocereus* specimens. Initial confusion arose regarding whether the symptoms—including stunted growth and abnormal pup development—were caused by mealybugs, root rot, maggots, or termite larvae. Topic authority Gee Bee identified the culprit as //Hypogeococcus// sp., confirming a mealybug infestation. The discussion detailed various treatment methodologies, ranging from physical removal and alcohol washes to systemic chemical applications like imidacloprid and organic deterrents like nicotine.

| 2026-02-16 (approx) | Ryan TaskLabor | "yes. I have organic tobacco ground to powder and in a shaker to sprinkle. I've had one other person say they mix with alcohol to extract and spray." |

| 2026-03-09 (approx) | Tyler LaGatta | "You need to wait for the fresh cutting to callous over.. especially if you use soil..you can sometimes get away with fresh cuttings in coco perlite but to be safe you should take your cutting place it into a paper bag for a few days and let it callous over and then pot it" |
