===== Overview =====
Root rot is a destructive condition affecting cacti, primarily driven by fungal or bacterial pathogens that thrive in excess moisture and stagnant air. It compromises the plant's root system and vascular bundle, often leading to systemic decline or death if left untreated. For growers, managing root rot is a critical aspect of cultivation, particularly during propagation, grafting, or periods of high humidity and cold temperatures.

===== Symptoms & Identification =====
Root rot manifests in several distinct ways depending on the stage of infection and the specific pathogens involved:
* **Vascular Discoloration:** When cutting into an infected stem, the vascular ring/bundle appears brown, mushy, or discolored.
* **Internal Rooting Anomalies:** Infected cuttings may attempt to push out internal aerial roots from the core (which can look like small "tentacles" or worms) that quickly become brown and necrotic due to bacterial or fungal infection at the vascular ring.
* **Softness and Squishiness:** The base, middle, or tip of the cactus becomes soft, squishy, and structurally compromised, causing branches to lean or collapse.
* **Weeping Black Rot / Humidity Spots:** Often confused with systemic root rot, weeping black rot presents as unsightly black spots or lesions on the skin. While community members like Dion Gryphon and Brian Fitch note that weeping black rot is not directly connected to root rot and typically heals into hard, unsightly scars without killing the plant, systemic rot originating from the roots or cuts is far more lethal.
* **Confusion with Callousing Issues:** Fresh cuts that fail to dry properly in cold, humid, or stagnant conditions will turn black and mushy rather than forming a clean, dry scab.

===== Cause & Spread =====
The primary drivers of root rot and associated postharvest infections include:
* **Pathogens:** Community authority **Gee Bee** identified **postharvest Phytophthora** as a major culprit. This fungal-like pathogen often begins in the ground due to soil splashing from heavy rain or excessive irrigation, with symptoms worsening significantly during storage or callousing. Other cases involve opportunistic bacteria infecting the vascular ring.
* **Environmental Factors:** High humidity, cold temperatures (such as cutting at the end of winter), lack of sunlight, and stagnant air (zero airflow) prevent cuts from callousing and encourage fungal spores to colonize the tissue.
* **Substrate and Drainage:** Heavy soils containing wood chips or high organic matter retain water too long, depriving roots of oxygen.
* **Mechanical Transmission:** Using unsterilized blades during cutting or grafting can introduce bacteria and fungi directly into the vascular bundle, spreading the infection further up the core. Placing fresh cuts on dirty surfaces (like artificial turf or damp ground) also introduces pathogens.

===== Treatment & Management =====
Treatment depends on the severity of the rot and the specific plant variety:

==== Chemical Treatments ====
* **Propiconazole:** For high-value or highly sensitive plants (such as variegated *Lophophora*), **Gee Bee** recommends trying **propiconazole**, noting it may save otherwise doomed specimens.
* **Sulfur Powder:** Widely recommended by the community (including Robert Stargel, Michael Snyder, and Benjamin Schwarzschild) to dust on fresh cuts or infected spots to dry them out and prevent fungal colonization.
* **Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2):** A quick spray of H2O2 is suggested by Brandon Allinger for surface disinfection.
* **Gypsum:** John Hervey suggests adding gypsum and letting the plant dry out in the sun.

==== Cultural & Surgical Practices ====
* **Surgical Amputation:** Cut away the soft, discolored tissue. Growers must slice until the vascular bundle is completely clean and free of brown spots. The blade must be sterilized with rubbing alcohol between *every single cut* to avoid dragging pathogens deeper into the healthy tissue.
* **Airflow and Ventilation:** Airflow is critical. Fresh cuts should be placed in a dry, well-ventilated area—ideally with a fan running on them—to callous quickly.
* **Grafting:** If the rot has progressed too far up the stem but the tip is still clean, grafting the tip onto a healthy rootstock may be the only way to save the genetics.
* **Soil Correction:** Repot cacti into highly inorganic, well-draining substrates. Johnathon Siwiec recommends a mix of lava rock, fine crush, oyster shells, pea gravel, glacial rock dust, rock phosphate, and minimal organic matter (like worm castings or kelp meal). Avoid wood chips.

^ Date ^ Reporter ^ Diagnosed by ^ Confidence ^ Key note / quote ^
| 2026-03-02 | Chet Gallaway | Gee Bee | 10/10 | "Postharvest phytophthora. infection often begins in the ground due to soil splashing... These are gone, unfortunately." |
| 2026-03-16 | Tracy Lynn Stogner | Community Consensus | 7/10 | Cactus recovered and firmed up after being pulled from direct hot sun and allowed to rest. |
| 2026-06-01 | Caley Jones | Brandon Imagnome / Peter Nehen | 8/10 | "It’s roots but it’s infected with bacteria at the vascular ring" |
| 2026-06-01 | Nathaniel Barnhurst | Gee Bee | 10/10 | Discussed saving sick variegated lophs: "try propiconazole next time. That may actually save this one, maybe." |
| 2026-06-01 | Jim Knowlton | Jim Knowlton / Dion Gryphon | 6/10 | Cactus discarded due to suspected root rot causing leaning branches; soil lacked proper drainage. |
| 2026-06-27 | Michael Rallo | Marc Gergelbeak Baker | 6/10 | Battling rot and fungal issues, though Rallo noted no local rain or humidity in his specific microclimate. |

===== Notes & Contradictions =====
* **Sterilization Debate:** While many growers (such as Robert Freeman and Robby Lapp) emphasize that a sterile knife is mandatory to prevent spreading rot, some experienced growers like Angelo Malachia Satalino and Brian Fitch state they rarely clean their knives, arguing that environmental factors like airflow and temperature are far more critical to successful callousing than blade sterility.
* **Weeping Black Rot vs. Root Rot:** Dion Gryphon explicitly flagged that weeping black rot (which causes black skin lesions) and systemic root rot are not connected, warning growers not to discard large, salvageable plants (like Mexican Fence Post stumps) over superficial black scarring.
* **Phytophthora Fatality:** While community members often suggest "cutting until clean" to save a rotting cactus, **Gee Bee** pointed out that once *Phytophthora* takes hold postharvest, the infection is systemic and the cuts are usually "gone" and unlikely to stop rotting even if recut.
