===== Overview =====
Rot is a highly destructive condition in cacti characterized by the rapid decay and liquefaction of plant tissue. It poses a significant threat to growers as it can quickly compromise the structural integrity of the plant, potentially leading to total loss. However, it is frequently confused with less severe environmental spotting, making proper diagnosis critical before taking drastic action.

===== Symptoms & Identification =====
True rot presents with visible signs of decay, starting as black, mushy tissue at the base or stem of the cactus. As the condition progresses, large chunks of the plant turn to "soup," leaving deep, gaping holes that may ooze a black, pus-like fluid.

**Common Confusions:**
Rot is commonly confused with "humidity spots" or superficial fungal scarring, which are normal in genera like //Trichocereus//. Unlike true rot, these spots typically remain superficial and eventually dry out to form hard, tan-to-grey scars rather than liquefying the plant.

===== Cause & Spread =====
The underlying pathogen or cause is unconfirmed in the community discussion, but the condition is highly associated with:
  * High atmospheric humidity (such as coastal environments).
  * Exposure to rainfall and excess moisture.
  * Fungal pathogens colonizing open wounds or weakened tissue.

===== Treatment & Management =====
The community suggests two primary management strategies:

==== Surgical Intervention ====
  * **Excision:** Use a clean knife to excise all black, mushy tissue until only healthy, green/white flesh remains. Alternatively, perform a clean chop to salvage the healthy section above the rot.
  * **Wound Treatment:** Apply sulfur powder or a mix of sulfur and rooting powder directly to the open wounds to prevent fungal colonization.
  * **Fungicide:** Spraying the affected area with a fungicide is suggested by some growers as an alternative to cutting.
  * **Drying:** Keep the treated plant completely dry and sheltered from rain for at least two weeks to allow the wounds to callous.

==== Passive Management (Wait-and-See) ====
In high-humidity regions, experienced growers advise waiting to see if the spots dry out and scar over naturally, as proactive cutting may be unnecessary for superficial humidity spots.

===== Notes & Contradictions =====
**Authority Notice:** Gee Bee did not participate in this discussion thread.

There is a notable division in the community regarding the necessity of cutting:
  * **To Cut:** Some growers argue that suspected rot must be cut away immediately to prevent it from spreading and destroying the plant.
  * **To Wait:** Tony Guajardo and Brian Fitch argue against immediate cutting, stating that many "rot-like" black spots are merely humidity responses that will safely scar over if left alone. Brian Fitch notes, "they usually just turn into scars if left alone. It will look like rot at first. I use to be proactive now I sit and wait," particularly in high-humidity areas like the Gulf Coast where plants grown outdoors naturally develop these spots.
