===== Description =====
This entry describes the physical damage Snails and Slugs inflict on Trichocereus cacti. Snail and slug damage is characterized by irregular, chewed lesions and deep cavities (up to 5/8 inches deep and 1/4 inches wide) on the tender, fresh epidermis near the apical meristem. This feeding can disrupt the rib structure and damage areoles, occasionally causing tip termination or mutation.

===== History & Origin =====
The phenomenon of gastropod damage on Trichocereus species is globally documented among growers, particularly in high-humidity regions or during wet seasons.

===== Cultivation Notes =====
To prevent damage to the epidermis and apical meristems of Trichocereus cacti, the following cultivation practices are recommended:
  * **Pest Monitoring:** Inspect plants at night or early morning with a flashlight to locate active slugs and snails. They love to hide under pots during the day, especially where it remains damp there.
  * **Physical Control:** Manually remove pests using a tool (e.g., a "slug stick", or chopsticks).
  * **Relocation:** Move pots to drier, elevated locations away from cool, damp areas where pests harbor. Clean leaf litter and soil buildup under pots placed on concrete, asphalt, etc.
  * **Traps:** Place shallow dishes of beer (such as in frisbees) or vinegar near the plants to attract and drown pests.
  * **Chemical Control:** Apply commercial molluscicides like Sluggo if infestations are severe.
  * **Alternative Pests:** For earwig prevention, dust the growing tips with Diatomaceous Earth (DE) (may damage farina).
  * For general Trichocereus health, maintain a well-draining soil mix and water deeply only when the soil is completely dry to avoid creating a humid microclimate favored by pests.

===== Community Discussion & Citations =====
The community discussion centers on identifying the cause of localized flesh damage on cactus tips. The consensus strongly points to slugs and snails as the primary culprits, noting their tendency to target soft apical growth during wet weather. Some members discuss the ecological ethics of relocating versus killing the pests. Alternative diagnoses include earwigs, birds (specifically thrashers in Arizona pecking Lophophora), and mites.
