===== Description =====
"Sooty Mold" is a superficial fungal disorder that affects the epidermis of cacti. It presents as a dark, soot-like black film or coating, typically accumulating on older growth and within the recesses of the ribs. Because the mold is entirely superficial and non-systemic, the underlying plant tissue remains healthy, and the black film can be physically scrubbed off. Over time, as the cactus grows wider and the ribs expand, the mold may naturally fade or become less visible. While it is primarily a cosmetic issue, a heavy coating can cause a minor reduction in photosynthesis by blocking sunlight, potentially leaving the host slightly more vulnerable to secondary environmental stressors.

===== History & Origin =====
"Sooty Mold" is highly prevalent in humid, subtropical regions such as Florida and the Gulf Coast of the United States, particularly during the wet summer months. Documented cases frequently arise when growers relocate large specimens from arid climates to high-humidity coastal zones, where the plants struggle to adapt to the persistent atmospheric moisture.

===== Cultivation Notes =====
  * **Environmental Management:** The primary causes of sooty mold are high humidity, poor airflow, and prolonged moisture on the epidermis (such as morning dew). Placing affected cacti in positions where they receive direct morning sun helps dry the dew quickly, preventing the mold from establishing.
  * **Soil Composition Debate:** There is community disagreement regarding the role of soil in fungal issues. Some growers suggest that highly organic soil mixes promote fungal diseases and root rot, recommending a highly inorganic substrate (50% to 90% pumice, perlite, or gravel). However, experienced growers in humid climates (e.g., the Gulf Coast) report that //Trichocereus// species thrive and grow rapidly (up to two feet per season) in highly organic soil mixes containing compost and native dirt, provided they receive adequate airflow and sunlight.
  * **Physical & Chemical Treatments:**
   * **Manual Cleaning:** The mold can be physically scrubbed off the epidermis using water and a soft brush. This will also remove farina.
   * **Preventative Sprays:** A foliar spray consisting of a milk and water mixture is reported to prevent the onset of sooty mold, though it will not remove existing mold.
   * **Fungicides (Disputed):** The application of garden phosphorus (2 tablespoons per gallon of water as a spray or soil drench) has been suggested, though this is a powerful treatment typically targeted at systemic fungal pathogens rather than superficial sooty mold.

===== Community Discussion & Citations =====
The community discussion focused on diagnosing a black coating on a relocated //Trichocereus//. While some users suspected systemic root rot or fungal infections due to organic soil, experienced growers clarified that the issue was superficial sooty mold driven by humidity. A minor point of confusion arose when one user incorrectly conflated sooty mold with powdery mildew.

| 2026-03-30 (approx) | Jaa Shoo Uh | "Its sooty mold. Its superficial. It happens on old growth from lack of airflow or sunlight." |
| 2026-03-30 (approx) | Charlie Brown | "doesn't harm the plant so much just looks bad. I'm sure it decreases some small amt of photosynthesis and could make it more vulnerable in other ways." |
| 2026-04-06 (approx) | Robby Lapp | "Sooty Mold 😆 I hate it. Part of life in Florida in the summer. I hear spraying with a mixture of milk and water prevents it (but will not remove it)." |
| 2026-04-06 (approx) | Brian Fitch | "I grow on the gulfcoast with 80 to 90 percent humidity year round. And I use mostly regular potting soil mix with compost and sometimes my native ditch dirt. I dont have a issue using mostly organic soil." |

===== Credibility Notes =====
* **Jaa Shoo Uh:** Provided an accurate, concise diagnosis of superficial sooty mold and its environmental causes, which aligns with established botanical knowledge.
* **Robby Lapp:** Offered practical, region-specific cultivation advice (Florida summer conditions, morning sun exposure) and noted cultivar-specific susceptibility.
* **Brian Fitch:** Provided valuable context as an experienced Gulf Coast grower, demonstrating that organic soil does not inherently cause fungal issues in humid climates if the plants are healthy and active.
* **Charlie Brown:** Correctly identified that the mold is non-harmful but cosmetically displeasing, noting its minor impact on photosynthesis and physical removability.
* **Phil Mack & Richard Goforth:** Rated lower due to incorrect or misleading information. Phil Mack misdiagnosed the superficial mold as systemic root rot/fungal disease and insisted on highly inorganic soil, which was refuted by local growers. Richard Goforth incorrectly conflated sooty mold with powdery mildew, which is a taxonomically and symptomatically distinct fungal disease.
