===== Overview =====
Excess exposure to Light, UV rays, and heat can damage the epidermal tissue of the plant. Sudden exposure to intense solar radiation or high temperatures as might be seen in a heat wave or moving/rotating a plant without adequate acclimation exacerbate these issues. Some chemical or oil applications to the skin can cause photosensitivity(sensitivity to light). The damage can take several forms and appearances. While mild cases result in localized yellowing in spots or of faces that the plant can recover from, severe burns can lead to scarring of whole faces/sections, tissue necrosis, mushy rot, and secondary infections.

===== Symptoms & Identification =====
Recognizing sunburn involves observing the pattern, color, and texture of the epidermal damage:
  * **Coloration:** Sunburn typically manifests as uniform white or bright yellow patches on the epidermis. In transient or mild cases, it can present as temporary splotchiness that may appear during harsh sun days and sometimes disappears overnight. Under severe stress, the affected area may turn red before eventually scabbing over.
  * **Distribution:** The damage occurs almost exclusively on the sides or tips of the plant that receive the most direct exposure to the sun.
  * **Progression:** Over time, severely damaged skin callouses over, forming dry, hard, tan or white scars. However, if the burn is extreme, the tissue can become sunken, orange, and mushy, indicating secondary rot or tissue death. Cacti with severe burns resulting in scar tissue or tissue death lose a significant portion of their photosynthetic capability, which can cause them to lag in growth compared to healthy specimens.

==== Cause ====
Sunburn develops due to:
  * **Inadequate Acclimation:** Moving a cactus directly from low-light conditions (such as indoor winter storage, greenhouses, or shipping boxes) into full outdoor sun without a gradual transition period.
  * **Reorientation:** Rotating a cactus so that a side previously acclimated to the shade is suddenly turned toward direct sunlight.
  * **Photo-Phytotoxicity:** Applying certain chemical or oil-based sprays (such as neem oil, isopropyl alcohol, certain pest and fungal treatments) can cause increased susceptibility to sunburn or can amplify direct light and cause burns. Always read and follow product labels. Its safest to apply most products in the shade or at dusk to avoid burns.
  * **Reflective Glare:** Placement near highly reflective surfaces, such as windows. If indoors under artificial lights, using a reflective, untextured surround.
  * **Environmental Extremes:** Sudden seasonal transitions, intense sunny periods, and temperature fluctuations.
  * **Loss of Glaucous Layer:** Environmental stress or certain pest treatments and foliar feed applications can cause cacti to lose their protective waxy glaucous layer, leaving the underlying epidermal tissue vulnerable to solar damage.
  * **Nutrient deficiency:** Chlorosis, caused by nutrient deficiency, can leave affected tissue more susceptible to sunburn.

====Similar related conditions====
  * **Chlorosis:** Sometimes, long term high light exposure accompanied by insufficient or imbalanced nutrient feeding can result in the chlorophyll in the plant breaking down in a localized area, resulting in the skin turning a yellowish or lighter green tint in areas facing the highest light exposure. This condition leaves the affected area more susceptible to sunburn and reduces the plants capability to photosynthesize sunlight into energy. The exact appearance of Chlorosis varies depending on which nutrient(s) are lacking and how severely:
    * A slight nitrogen deficiency can result in surfaces facing the sun turning a slightly yellow shade of green, starting from the lower column and creeping upward. In more severe cases the whole plant can turn stark yellow.
    * A potassium deficiency can result in mottling, splotchy straw colored or brown spots on the lower to middle column. Spots can be sunken.
    * A magnesium deficiency starts in the lower columns between ribs, spreads to the whole lower column. Affected tissue will change in color through progressively lighter shades of green and yellow to a bleached appearance, then cork.
    * A micronutrient deficiency (Specifically Fe, S, Zn, Mn) can affect chlorophyll in the tip, turning it into a lighter green, bright yellow, or even nearly white shade.
    * Aside from a specific nutrient being strictly deficient in the feed, its also possible that a soil or water pH imbalance or nutrient ratio issue can be causing the plants roots to take up less than the required amount of the nutrient that is deficient, despite it being present in adequate quantity in the soil.
  * **Sun stress:** Less severe than sunburn, and not permanent. Reddish purple tint to outer portions of ribs near the tip on surfaces facing the most light exposure. The plant is producing protective pigments to try and shield it from excess light.

====Common Confusions====
 Sunburn is frequently confused with:
    * **Fungal Infections:** Often characterized by more irregular, patchy, or spreading lesions rather than uniform sun-exposed damage.
    * **Bacterial Infections:** Which may present as lighter orange-yellow patches.
    * **Frost Damage:** Can look similar to sunburn scars but occurs after cold exposure.
    * [[:virology:T:Thrips|Thrip Damage]]: Which causes sandpaper like scarring on the epidermis.

===== Treatment & Management =====

==== Prevention & Acclimation ====
  * **Gradual Exposure:** Slowly introduce cacti to direct sunlight. For example, start with 2 hours of direct morning sun, covering them for the rest of the day, and incrementally increase exposure (e.g., to 3 hours, then 5 hours) over at least a week. You could also start with multiple layers of shade cloth and remove layers, or reduce shade cloth % over time.
  * **Rooting in Shade:** Root new cuttings in a shaded area unless they are known to have come from a full-sun environment.
  * **Maintain Orientation:** When moving or transplanting cacti, mark the pots or stems to ensure the same side remains facing the sun.

==== Post-Burn Recovery ====
  * **Dry Scars:** If the burn is dry and hard, leave it alone. Providing extra watering during the growing season can help the plant push past the scarred area.
  * **Mushy Rot:** If the burned tissue becomes soft, mushy, or begins to rot, cut away the necrotic portions to prevent secondary pathogens from spreading. Allow the cut to callous over in a shaded, well-ventilated location.
  * **Shading and Drying:** Shade the affected areas of the plant if possible, and keep the damaged skin dry. If the tissue is hard but putting out pus, reduce the humidity and let the soil dry out completely before watering again.
  * **Fungal Treatments:** If secondary fungal activity is suspected on sun-stressed plants, a soil drench or foliar spray of phosphorous acid (phos acid) can be used, but ensure the dilution is not too concentrated ("hot") to avoid burning the weakened epidermal tissue.

^ Date ^ Reporter ^ Diagnosed by ^ Key note / quote ^
| 2026-06-28 | Dave Crow | Dave Crow | "the first glaucous Ikaros started losing it waxy cover and had sun damage at the termination, I transplanted it back to a pot and the segment that developed from the damage is fatter and throughly glaucous" |
| 2026-06-23 | David Flores | Nick VanWagner | "Neither IMO. Most likely bacterial" [Note: John Alan Steigenberger suggested fungal; Chris Cosby suggested calcium deficiency] |
| 2026-05-25 | Shane Thomas | Peter Maxwell | "That’s not sunburn. That’s a fatal fungal infection." [Note: Shane Thomas later updated that it did not worsen and was likely a chemical burn from garden phos on sun-weakened skin] |
| 2026-04-27 | Isaac Taylor | Benjamin Schwarzschild | "it is important not to turn cacti when moving them, because the side that is use to the shade will burn easily when turned to the sun." |
| 2026-04-27 | Isaac Taylor | Kevin Dacus | "Sunburn 100% tried to acclimate to fast." |
| 2026-04-13 | Tommy Taber | Chad Rhodes | "I believe that what you are seeing is a mix of sun stress, and nutrient deficiency. I’m also guessing that your pH is way too high." |
| 2026-03-23 | Dave DeStefano | Dave DeStefano | "pretty certain it is, new growth is usually bright yellow on mine and shifting to green. That’s are completely white." |
| 2026-03-09 | Mario Peña | Rory Parkyn | "Don't use any oil based sprays. At all. They cause sunburn on cacti (phytotoxicity)." |
| 2026-03-09 | Hugo C Fresan | Curtis Relf | "Yep sunburn. Always root cuttings in shade unless you know they came from fullsun" |
| 2026-02-23 | Mario Peña | Peter Maxwell | "gradually increasing exposure or they will burn... The burn is a permanent injury... A cactus that has been severely burned loses a great deal of its ability to photosynthesize" |
| 2026-02-16 | Matt Beckinsale | Aay Jay | "Environmental stress. Could just be the repot, but given the narrowing girth, looks like it was recently rooted or a change in light level" |
| 2026-02-02 | Jaydyn McKenzie-Miechel | Chad Rhodes | "Sun stress and nute imbalance" [Note: Chad Rhodes recommended a 30% shade cloth] |

===== Notes & Contradictions =====
  * **Gee Bee Participation:** Gee Bee did not participate in this community discussion.
  * **Sunburn vs. Fungal/Bacterial Pathogens:** There is frequent disagreement in the community regarding whether patchy epidermal lesions are sunburn or active infections. Peter Maxwell diagnosed Shane Thomas's plant with a "fatal fungal infection," which Shane later determined was a stable chemical burn. Similarly, John Alan Steigenberger and Nick VanWagner suspected fungal or bacterial pathogens on David Flores's plant, while Chris Cosby argued it was a calcium deficiency.
  * **Uniformity of Sunburn:** Chris Smoknofften and Peter Maxwell argue that true sunburn is uniform and predictably worst on direct-exposure areas, rather than patchy. However, Isaac Taylor noted that temporary, patchy "splotchiness" can occur on harsh sun days and resolve overnight.
  * **Frost vs. Sunburn:** Robert Riester initially diagnosed Tommy Taber's plant with frost damage based on 30 years of desert growing experience, but retracted the diagnosis when Taber clarified the plant was located in Miami and kept indoors during cold fronts.
  * **Glaucous Layer vs. Variegation:** Chris Smoknofften mistook the blue glaucous layer on Oliver Leach's Sharxx Blue for variegation, which Bradon Blackman corrected, explaining that the blue is a natural protective wax.
