====== Waterlogging (Soil Oversaturation / Overwatering) ======
{{virology:w:media:waterlogged:f38c325b9d879b4c.jpg?400}}

===== Overview =====
Waterlogging is a cultural disorder in cacti caused by excessive soil moisture and poor drainage. This condition suffocates the root system, preventing proper nutrient uptake and potentially leading to root decay. It is a critical concern for growers as it mimics nutrient deficiencies and can quickly escalate to fatal rot if left unaddressed.

*Note: The community authority, Gee Bee, did not participate in this discussion. The following guidelines are synthesized from the consensus of experienced community members.*

===== Symptoms & Identification =====
* **Discoloration:** The primary visible sign is a generalized yellowing or pale discoloration of the cactus body.
* **Confusion with Nutrient Deficiencies:** This discoloration is frequently confused with nitrogen or general nutrient deficiencies, as waterlogged roots lose the ability to absorb nutrients.
* **Confusion with Light Issues:** While some growers may mistake the pale color for insufficient light, community members note that insufficient light typically causes thin, stretched growth (etiolation) rather than isolated discoloration.
* **Progression:** If soil oversaturation persists, the condition can progress directly to root rot.

===== Cause & Spread =====
Waterlogging is a physiological disorder caused by physical soil conditions—specifically, keeping the growing medium saturated for too long. It is not an infectious disease and does not spread from plant to plant, though multiple plants in the same poorly draining soil mix may show symptoms simultaneously. Prolonged waterlogging damages the root system, which can allow opportunistic pathogens to colonize the weakened tissue and cause root rot.

===== Treatment & Management =====
Because Gee Bee did not participate in this discussion, the treatment strategies are based on the recommendations of community contributors Jack Mehof, Pete Elston, and Christian Gullaci:
* **Soil and Moisture Management:** Immediately cease watering and allow the soil medium to dry out completely. Ensure the plant is potted in a highly porous, well-draining substrate.
* **Nutrient Supplementation:** If the root system is still functional but the plant is showing signs of chlorosis due to washed-out nutrients or poor uptake, apply a mild fertilizer. Jack Mehof recommends using a organic mix of "Fish & kelp" to gently restore nutrients. Christian Gullaci also advises feeding the plant once soil moisture is controlled.
* **Root Inspection:** If root rot is suspected (as suggested by Dan Valentine), unpot the plant to inspect the roots. Soft, black, or slimy roots must be pruned back to healthy tissue, and the cactus should be allowed to callous before repotting in fresh, dry soil.

===== Notes & Contradictions =====
Gee Bee did not participate in this thread.

There is an ongoing discussion regarding whether the symptoms observed are primary waterlogging, a direct nitrogen deficiency, or root rot. However, these conditions are highly interrelated: waterlogging frequently causes root rot and prevents the uptake of nitrogen, leading to the observed yellowing.

Additionally, a minor disagreement arose when Adam Greenberg suggested insufficient light as a cause; Greg Roberts corrected this, noting that insufficient light causes thin growth (etiolation) rather than the discoloration observed in this case.
