Forms light brown to tan lesions with no particular orientation or pattern. Often the lesions are boarded by a darker brown line and pycnidia fruiting bodies are uniformly distributed. Lesion can generally grow larger than either Phoma or Phomopsis, easily confused with both. If left unchecked, it poses a significant threat to the infected plant and can quickly spread to surrounding collections. ===== Cultivation Notes ===== To manage and prevent the spread of *Phyllosticta*, the following cultivation adjustments are recommended: * **Isolation:** Immediately isolate any infected plants showing active signs of spreading lesions. * **Fungicide Protocol:** Apply systemic and contact fungicides. Alternate applications of thiophanate-methyl and azoxystrobin, or use Mancozeb, to prevent the pathogen from developing resistance. * **Substrate Optimization:** Verify that the media pH is within the appropriate range for Trichocereus and ensure the soil has excellent drainage. * **Nutritional Support:** Supplement the fertilizer regimen with additional calcium, magnesium, and potassium to bolster the plant's natural immune defenses. ===== Community Discussion & Citations ===== The community discussion centered on identifying a fast-moving black spot disease on a specimen cultivated by Mel Moe. Expert Gee Bee identified the pathogen as *Phyllosticta* and provided a comprehensive treatment plan combining chemical controls with environmental and nutritional optimization. ^ Date ^ Speaker ^ Key Insight/Quote ^ | 2026-06-01 (approx) | Gee Bee | "Real aggressive and looks like phyllosticta. Check your ph on the media to see you are in range. Treat with thiophanate methyly and azoxystrobin or Mancozeb. Alternate apps. Isolate if it is spreading. Improve drainage and and consider adding a tad more calmag and potassium to your routine." | ===== Contributor Confidence ===== //Visible to trusted reviewers only.// ^ Contributor ^ Confidence ^ | Gee Bee | 10/10 | ===== Credibility Notes ===== Gee Bee is recognized as a primary authority on Trichocereus pathogens and virology within the community, possessing deep expertise in chemical treatment protocols and diagnostic identification.
