Oscar
Description
Oscar is a *Trichocereus pachanoi* clone known for its strong tendency to mutate, exhibiting both crested and monstrous growth forms. While it can grow tall, upright stems, it frequently produces highly irregular, mutated growth sectors.
History & Origin
The clone was originally acquired by the breeder Misplant through a forum trade many years ago. It is often associated with the clone “Olivia”; however, they are distinct genetic individuals, as evidenced by the fact that they have been successfully crossed with one another. Oscar has been utilized extensively in hybrid breeding by Misplant, including crosses such as *T. chalaensis* x *T. pachanoi* “Oscar”.
Cultivation Notes
If Oscar grows too tall, topping the primary upright stems can be used as a cultivation strategy. Pruning the dominant tall stems has been shown to successfully stimulate and force new bud development across the crested and monstrous sections of the plant.
Community Discussion & Citations
Analysis of the community discussion regarding the growth habits, origin, and breeding history of the Oscar clone.
| Date | Speaker | Confidence Score | Key Insight/Quote |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2025 (approx) | Bob Baker | 10 | “Brandon i had to top the tallest stem of Oscar earlier this year as it was too tall to reach the buds–doing so has forced new buds on many areas of the crested & monstrous stems” |
| 2022 (approx) | Bob Baker | 10 | “Anthon Jason i happen to have 1 pak of those seeds left……somebody once said misplant seeds are like little nuggets of gold 😋” |
| 2022 (approx) | Krüz Kalke | 8 | “Oscar and Olivia are plants Misplant received in a trade on a forum many years ago. I've written more about it on the Olivia post. Note that they're different clones since they've been crossed together” |
Credibility Notes
Bob Baker is designated as an expert override (10/10) due to his direct experience cultivating, propagating, and distributing seeds of the clone. Krüz Kalke (8/10) provided highly specific historical context regarding Misplant's early forum trades and the genetic distinction between the Oscar and Olivia clones, which aligns with established community knowledge.
