Trichocereus scopulicola — Identification

T. scopulicola (“Scop”) is one of the most distinctive and easily recognised Trichocereus: smooth, glossy, near-spineless columns with very few ribs. A favourite hybrid parent for the smoothness it passes on.

At a glance

Feature T. scopulicola
Ribs few — usually 4–6 (often 5), broad and flat/rounded
Spines essentially spineless, or tiny
Epidermis bright, glossy green; smooth “melting” look
Areoles small, felted, inconspicuous
Habit erect columns; rock-dwelling in habitat
Native Bolivia

Key identifying features

The low rib count + smooth, glossy, near-spineless appearance is diagnostic — scop has a soft, “melted” look unlike the more defined ribs of pachanoi. Very widely used in hybrids (e.g. scop × pachanoi crosses) to add smoothness and vigour.

Commonly confused with

  • A very smooth T. pachanoi, but pachanoi has more ribs and a matte (not glossy) skin.
